Day 5 – What are your favorite comfort foods and why?
Now this is a post that I enjoyed writing. Why did I enjoy it? I enjoyed writing it because I get to talk about FOOD! Mmmm. And we’re not talking about just any kind of food. We’re talking about COMFORT FOOD! The kind of food that can make you happy just by eating it. Food that makes you smile. When you eat it, it literally brings you comfort. Hence the name, comfort food.
Some people might think that comfort foods are only certain foods. I don’t believe that. To me, comfort foods are the ones that make you happy and bring you comfort when you eat them. This could range from spaghetti with meat sauce to sushi. It could be sweet or savory. If it is a meal that makes you happy, then it is your comfort food. Now let’s talk about my favorite comfort foods. If I were to make a restaurant and only sell my favorite comfort foods, these would be them.
Here is your menu …
Let’s start with the savory items …
Comfort Food #1 – Lasagna
Lasagna is one of the best foods out there. I’m completely convinced. Lasagna is an Italian casserole dish with layers of noodles, cheese, sauce, and meat. There are many different types of varieties. You can make vegetarian lasagna, using vegetables as the noodles and no meat. Or you could try to make one with just cheese. I have even heard of dessert lasagna. But to me, the best one … noodles, cheese, sauce, and meat. The meat is usually a mix of sausage and ground beef.
Cutting into the top crust of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese … there is nothing like it. Mmmm. My mouth waters just thinking about it.
Comfort Food #2 – Burgers and Fries
There is something so classic about a burger and fries. It’s a classic summer BBQ/cookout meal. I have always loved burgers. Cheeseburgers are my personal favorite. You can put some many different types of condiments and toppings on them. Sometimes I feel like just cheese with ketchup, mustard, mayo, and pickles. Other times I want more, like cheese, bacon, guacamole, and more. It really depends on my mood. And that’s one of the best things about getting a burger. You can make it whatever you want, depending on your mood.
And in my opinion, there is no better accompaniment to a great burger than french fries. Some people might want sweet potato fries or “fancy” fries. Not me. I want regular french fries. Baked or fried. Homemade or frozen. French fries are the best.
Comfort Food #3 – Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup
Is there anything better when you’re feeling under the weather than Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup? I know that when I have the flu, there is nothing that makes me feel better than chicken noodle soup. One of the last times that I was really sick, my husband had to work and my mother came down to help me with Emily. When she did, she brought her ALWAYS amazing chicken soup. She made some egg noodles on the side, put them in a bowl, and poured the soup over the noodles. It was so good. As always, it made me feel better.
Being that it is January and winter weather here in Rhode Island, I love to make soups and delicious warm foods. I think this winter I’m going to beg my mom for her chicken soup recipe and make it for my family … well for me, Will, and Jess. Emily wouldn’t eat soup if I begged her.
Comfort Food #4 – Homemade Baked Beans
We have always been a family that likes baked beans. Any big family get together, in the summer, we would always have my family’s recipe for baked beans. The recipe has been passed from my grandmother to my mother to me. One day I will pass it along to Emily. I will even pass along my bean pot to her as well.
I can remember seeing the bean pot come out of hiding and always getting excited. The house would smell like baked beans for the whole day while my mom made the delicious recipe. I couldn’t wait to eat them. And now, the responsibility of making the bakes beans is mine. I always look forward to getting a chance to make them.
Comfort Food #5 – Pulled Pork
I don’t remember the first time that I had pulled pork. Pork plus BBQ sauce. How could you go wrong? [Now, I know that not everyone puts BBQ sauce right on their pulled pork. But in my comfort food, I love BBQ sauce on mine.] I would get pulled pork at any restaurant I could find it at. If we were making it for dinner, I was thrilled. When I got married I learned how to make pulled pork. Seeing how much time goes into it. Hours of time. It makes it all that much sweeter.
Pulled pork is such an amazing dish. You can make pulled pork sandwiches. Pulled pork on a cheeseburger is delicious. I have made pulled pork grilled cheese sandwiches before. Loaded french fries with cheddar cheese, pulled pork, and a drizzle of BBQ sauce … YUM! Or you could eat is all by itself. There’s no way to go wrong with pulled pork.
Check out dessert! Here are the sweet items …
Comfort Food #6 – Chocolate Chip Cookies
One of my all-time favorite desserts, and favorite cookie, is Chocolate Chip Cookies. If you were to ask me, they are classic cookie. Nothing beats chocolate chip cookies. Warm chocolate chip cookies straight from the oven are the best, in my opinion. Of course you have to be careful not hurt yourself on hot cookies. But there is nothing like the warm, gooey taste of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.
I have passed my love of chocolate chip cookies down to my daughter too. Just the other day, she helped me make homemade chocolate chip cookies. [Making homemade, from scratch, cookies takes more time than the “break and bake” version, but they are definitely worth it. They truly are superior.] As soon as they came out of the oven, she wanted one. I had to remind her that she needed to wait for them to cool a bit. I guess she’s just as bad as her mother.
Comfort Food #7 – Chocolate Cake
To end my list, I’m going to let you all know what my favorite dessert of all time is … CHOCOLATE CAKE! In my opinion, there is nothing better than a good chocolate cake. Sweet, but not too sweet that you can only eat a bite or two before you have to stop. Sitting back with a piece of chocolate cake and a cup of coffee, or glass of wine … there’s nothing better.
I will usually go out and buy a chocolate cake, since making one can be quite time consuming. And, I haven’t mastered the best chocolate frosting yet. So a store bought cake is usually what I do in a pinch. [If you head over to Wright’s Dairy Farm, they always have a delicious array of cakes and goodies.]
These are my top 7 comfort foods. If you have to make a list, what would be on your list? Would your list be all savory? All sweet? Or would it be a good mix of both, like mine?
A little more info for you …
If you’re in Rhode Island and looking for a restaurant that serves comfort food, you have to check out one of my favorite spots. Blackie’s in Smithfield is one of the best restaurants in Rhode Island. It is my favorite local restaurant. They have a regular, paleo, and gluten-free menu. I would call their food “gourmet comfort food”. So if you are in RI, don’t feel like cooking, and want some comfort food … head to Blackie’s.
